Mental ray for Maya 4.5 is free for download at AliasWavefront.com

I don't know how to simulate... but, maybe others have some ideas user added image

edit:
I guess you can use Maya 4.5 Complete with mental ray, but I'm not crossing my heart and hoping to die.

edit2:
The site says it is free to download for both Complete and Unlimited. Crossing my heart and hoping to die.

I know you can make a dome of lights (about 100 lights) that alla have really small values. It will give you a similar effect as a skylight in a GI renderer.

Use GI_Joe!! Not sure if it works on PLE, so you can download a script (not a plug in so it should work) off of Highend 3d, that will create a dirrectional light at every vertex of a sphere that you made. I don't know you can try that out, I think that there was a script that also controls the intensity of every light in the scene as well, so you could probably use both hand in hand. Not sure so you would have to check it out. Hope that helps at all,
Brian

It's done to simulate those white-ish untextured characters. It's not really done for much else and you will find it hard to light anything else with that method...

yeah, it sux trying to light indoor scenes with it, Don't think that it works indoor. Oh well. Its alot better for outdoor stuff. I must say, that I have been able to use it on highly textured objects, such as my jeep for example, and it seems to work well. Good luck with it. Thanks,
Brian
