Introduction to Maya - Rendering in Arnold
This course will look at the fundamentals of rendering in Arnold. We'll go through the different light types available, cameras, shaders, Arnold's render settings and finally how to split an image into render passes (AOV's), before we then reassemble it i

Problem with textures! Please help

Hey there!

Im not amazing with Maya, I am only doing work in Maya for 2 modules on my uni course since I work as a concept artist specialising in 2D.

For my modules, I failed and am resubmitting both for Wednesday, there are little things I need to do to the work to fix it.

One module is 3D character animation, I didnt animate (lol). The rigging was all messed up and the textures...well I wont even go into that. ANYWAYS, I have sorted the rigging and the textures, skinned the model and it works fine, I just need to do about 15 seconds of simple animation and then animate a walk cycle for game export. I have that sorted since after I animate for animation, I will fill the gaps in the heirarchy and then re-skin for game. Im planning to do this tomorow and Tuesday. I seem to have a problem I hope you can help with..

I have laid out textures and done it right this time, the model looks fine, but when i move joints to test animation, the textures move over her body and mess up, then when i look in the texture editor, the UVs have exploded into a giant mess.

I have no idea what causes this, so Im hopeing you can help, suggestions?

My other module is just a scene that needs the UV maps laying out better, so a days work should do it. Im hoping to get this problem sorted so I can move on with it, please help!

Cheers

You could try delete history and freeze transformation for the mesh, I think this should have been done before you rigged it............dave

Ok, Ill try that, will mean re-skinning the mesh, but then again, I dont need her to do amazing animation.

This is baring in mind Ive never touched maya let alone animation until a couple months ago so Im pretty rubbish at the whole thing.

Just try the delete history and freeze transformation first, if that does not work I hope you have saved the model before you rigged it then do the same on that and export your new rig to your old file.......hope that make sence.........dave

Ok, I tried to delete history and then freeze transformations on the mesh, then I bound the rigg to the mesh but the rigg doesnt work with the mesh, its like I never bound it at all, the transformations on the rigg seem locked and I have to unlock xyz axis points to use the move and rotate tool, the mesh doesnt react, The only reaction is the spine central cluster.

The textures are fixed when I move this section, but the rest of the rigg is unresponsive. Its so wierd... I really dont know what to do.. Whether I just animate without textures and then show the model and rigg textured and the solution to the problem which would require more time but the solution is there, or to struggle on and try and find a solution before submission.

Hmm

Read my reply again, if you have a saved file before you rigged it you can export the new rig to the old file doing the delete history stuff before you bind the mesh...........dave

Daverave is almost right - all uv`in (for textures) must be done before rigging - texturing itself can be done after. Pain in the bum I know as I also believe that saving out the weight maps will also not work because of the change to uv`s.

Nothing stopping you importing the rig but the weighting will have to be re-done.

use a texture reference object. no need to re-skin, rig or anything like that.
