Smooth feature behaviour

Why if you smooth a selection of faces, this action affects the vertex normal of other faces?
e.g. With a polygon cube if you smooth the upper face, you'll notice the vertex normals of the bottom face affected

As far back as I can remember smoothing any faces of an object will smooth the normals of the entire object.
