Get halfway through a model and find it's an unworkable mess? Can't add edge loops where you need them? Can't subdivide a mesh properly? If any of this sounds familiar check this course out.
I am a graduating student from an animation college in Cape Town, South Africa. As part of our final year curriculum we have to put together a demo reel of 1 - 2 mins in length. I would really appreciate it if any one could spare the time to take a look at my reel and give me some constructive criticism, you can view it at:
I think that's probably one of the best student reels I've seen!
Nice job
Dave
From a readers' Q and A column in TV GUIDE: "If we get involved in a nuclear war, would the electromagnetic pulses from exploding bombs damage my videotapes?"
Your work looks good and the overall length is good. I only have minor suggestions. Cut the intro title page down to 5 seconds, since many studios will only view the first 10 seconds of your reel before deciding to either leave it in or toss it. You always want to start with your best work, so I would put the second piece (red haired guy in room) first. As far as the piece you currently have first, stay on the beginning longer, so I can see the rack focus with the foreground in focus. I didn't even notice the focus changed until I watched it several times. When I viewed this as a small screen (not full screen), I didn't see your credits at the bottom of each piece. That's really important info for employers, so put it up a little higher. After showing the bald head turntable with the skin texture, add some hair to show how the texture works with hair. It looks a little spotty/patchy without the hair, but I think the hair will make it look perfect. One weak spot is the skirt on the tentacle guy, so consider refining that skirt model. This will sound odd and maybe I'm completely off base, but seeing the De Klerk name in the final credits has a very negative connotation for me. Consider removing that, as you don't know how employers will respond, subconsciously or otherwise. Hope that all helps. Good luck.
Thank you so much I will take all of your suggestions into account and definately make those changes. I think that you're spot on especially re the head model and the skirt. As for the de Klerk name it has equally positive and negative connotations in South Africa and I can't exclude it as Thea de Klerk was a fundamental member of the short team, but thank you for your insight on that point none the less
Honestdom, David and Bobdog you guys are all awesome
