Introduction to Maya - Modeling Fundamentals Vol 1
This course will look at the fundamentals of modeling in Maya with an emphasis on creating good topology. We'll look at what makes a good model in Maya and why objects are modeled in the way they are.

How to tie my shoe laces?

The topic probably sounds either stupid or funny. This is Maya related though.
I've made these shoes and I'm thinking of a way to tie the laces in a bow-shape. Do I really have to do it step by step as if they are real-world shoe laces? (i've done that before with other ropes / stuff like that but it's hard).

Edit: Oh well... did it my own way.

I would think this could be done using CV curves. But I think you would need to do it like you were actually tying some real world shoelaces.

Well, without CV curves I still ended up doing them as if they were real shoelaces. Although at some points it was annoying as some facets kept going through each other at every twist.
Note that the mesh wasn't smoothed when I've done this, but had HQ display on so that I could see what the final result would look like.

Another problem I have with the shoes:
I have used Duplicate special on the first shoe where i didn't tie the laces and the duplicated one was the one where I have tied the laces. Later I have merged components in both shoes, only that the original (with laces untied) takes a looong time to be selected, whereas the special duplicate takes a second only. Why does it do that?

Edit: I fixed it by duplicating the buggy shoe and the replica can be selected easily so i just deleted the bugged shoe which wouldn't get selected fast enough. But I'd still like to learn why that happened, if anyone has experienced this problem before.

It might be the history... it builds up over time, so if you delete that, it shouldn't lag so much.

I'll try to delete the history next time, maybe that will work on that character i've modeled too (though it had way more changes than the shoe and it still didn't lag more than 2 seconds at most). Thanks.

Also, is there any way to render fur faster?( takes me anywhere between 40 and 50 seconds with Maya Software and 1 minute with Mental Ray) And why do i need those files from My Documents or else i get a fur error? If i want to export the file with the character to another computer, must i also add the settings from the Maya folder from My Documents?
Last time i tried to send my file to my friend, he said that all the nCloth settings went crazy on his pc (didn't take collide object into account), even though on mine they worked fine.
