Maya for 3D Printing - Rapid Prototyping
In this course we're going to look at something a little different, creating technically accurate 3D printed parts.

3dsmax displace? alternative

there is a command in 3dsmax called "displace" which uses a bitmap to model geometry by displacing the geometry according to the bitmap's color info, i would like to know if there is a maya equivalent to do that kind of operation?

i have a plane, i want to displace it with a bitmap so it looks like a hole is in the middle of the plane. The reason am asking is because the 3dsmax "displace" command allows to displace geometry with bitmaps and interactively view and control the amount and the look of the displacement whereas in maya i have to render to see the results of my displacement. I want to make a crater on the road like a meteor crash, so i want the hole to look somewhat organic and natural, so i won't mind an alternative workflow.

I use maya 2011, a nice feature like that might make the upgrade worth it, but am still mad at autodesk for leaving out iray support on maya 2012. I hope i can find a work around in the meantime.

Was you crater going to be animated if not you could model it, a boolean of a cigar shape would do the trick..................dave

I've been thinking about this myself lately; but haven't come across anything that does it quite yet. (Besides the Maya heightfield) I think I might have to write my own plugin.
