Adding more divisions to the flat ends of a cylinder?

Aloha,

I'm just wondering how to add more circular divisions to the flat-end of a cylinder.

I want to create an inner ring that can be extruded backwards to create a rifle barrel.

Thanks,

Yes, just I delete all the faces at the top/bottom of the cylinder. Then I grab the edge and extrude inward. If you still want to close the cylinder then extrude again, and just click 'merge to centre' under 'edit mesh'.

The insert edge loop won't work on the original faces because they are triangles. If you want to edit the original faces, you have to delete them, extrude the edges inward as close to the centre as possible to recreate the same shape, but don't merge to centre. Now each face will have 4 vertexes and you can use 'insert edge loop'.

You can also select those bottom faces and do an extrude inwards.

No, no no don't extrude it's too slow.

method 1:
select the middle vertice
convert selection to edges (control + right click - top - top)
connect component (shift + right click )

method 2:
select border edge loop (select one edge and double click)
use the awesome offset edge tool (shift + right click and then middle button click on loop)
delete the edges that you don't want

Just change the subdivisions-caps setting when you create it

Insert edge loop just below top, then grab the top row of verts, scale in and v-snap down to the new edge loop. Any others?

oh oh wait I want to play too! LOL

1. select a vertex at the center of a cap
2. ctrl-LMB and select To Faces (this selects all the faces on the cap)
3. shift-RMB and select extrude and extrude all the faces inward

... Bob's your uncle ...

you now not only have a new inner loop but the faces can now be extruded inward by simply pressing g to repeat the extrude.

I dunno Rick, that's just Genny's with a particular selection method. But I do like me some Shift+RMB+stroke down extrude action.
Bullet, you gotta come up with your own, no +1-ing.

Well great Mother of PEARL!! I appreciate all of these great solutions, but since I'm a new guy, I went with the simplest solution of just creating a tube, bailing on the cylinder altogether.

Thanks to everyone regardless - It's very comforting to be new at something challenging and have a great forum for support.

Cheers.

LOL have fun....the point of this madness was to help you...thats what is so damn good around here. We had some competition in a fun way...which is how it should be...and show you that Maya has MANY different ways of achieving one thing. So....if it doesnt work one way...there are plenty more to get you there! Dont get stuck in a rut thinking it can only be done one way...for most things...find a way which is quick but you are comfortable with and suits the task at hand. Enjoy mate

cheers bullet
