Maya 2020 fundamentals - modelling the real world
Get halfway through a model and find it's an unworkable mess? Can't add edge loops where you need them? Can't subdivide a mesh properly? If any of this sounds familiar check this course out.

Toon Outline with detailed Fur Control

Dear reader....

thank you for your time and willingness to share knowledge.....

i am trying to create a certain effect to a human body
like the electrical spikes in this image
user added image

my aproach is to make a toon outline to the body
then convert this "paint effects toon" into a nurb surface so i can add fur to it

when i do this.... the hands are much to full of the fur and his arms to less
aswell his eyes and ears recieve a toon line that i find not nescasary....
user added image

i tried creating abody with a complete fur on its skin and then use a facing ratio to only make visible the outer circumference of the body
but this with no acceptable result

i only need the effect around the body when i fly around it with the camera

does anyone has some clues for me to achieve this effect

thank you for your time.....

ieoie

Hi Dave,

more people told me that......
i like to do it maya because then i would have more control over the movement of the spikes

hmm, not sure you will have more control over the movement of the spikes tbh. you could start by doing a previs of what you would like.
use your grey scale model.
use planes to represent the spikes.
position everything
create and animate your camera.
do a playblast and post it here.
this will give you and everyone else a better idea of what you want to achieve. it shouldn't take more than a couple of hours.

do it in 2d. i think fur is a dead end. it will probably look crap as fur anyway.
what about paint effect lightening bolts, are they no good? this is always going to be a comping thing. you will have much more control.

in 2d you say

how would you setup then
the character is rigged and moving, plus moving camera....

i can find my way around in maya but these new things are still new to me....

will see if i can connect the lightning from visor to the curves from the toon outline

the fur i can make very good looking so thats why my aproach is through that....

thank you for your idea
i will see if i can get the lightning connected to the outline curve.....

off we goo....
;-)
