Edit Nurbs, inserting Isoparm

Hi guys, I am using Maya 2012 on OS X and am following along to the Low Poly Character Tutorial. I have created a Nurbs sphere and am trying to make the mouth.

The instructor right clicks > Isoparm, clicks the sphere and a circle where he wants the mouth to start appears. Then Edit Nurbs > Insert Isparm. When I do this, I do not get the same result that he does, a circle around the base.

In the attachment you can see the circle I am trying to create around the origin. It does not work like in the video. What gives?

Edit: I solved this issue. To anyone who encounters this problem, select the outer circle from the origin user added image
