How do I get 'smooth lines' with the interactive split tool in Maya 2012?

Hi, this is probably a really dumb question but I can't seem to get a smooth edge (you know like blended, where you can't see the harsh line) when I cut with the interactive split tool. I've only been using maya 2012 for the project I've just started. At first it was fine, the cuts were blended, but I f*cked around in the tool settings and now no matter what I put in magnetic tolerance the harshness is always the same. OK so my 'snap magnets' is set at 0 and my 'magnetic tolerance' is set to 5.0000. Please could someone help me out?

I have attached an image of what I mean...

Cheers.
