Interior Scene

Hello,
Mental ray render of an old c4d model I made. I've tried lighting this in a way other than using the usual sun and sky and final gather, by using area lights with GI photons. The ceiling of the model has a window plus there is a window at the front, both have area lights, with mental ray portals plugged in. The concrete tends to make the render look dirty, so I may try a plainer material.

That's coming along pretty well. How many indirect bounces are there? I ask because some areas look mighty dark and there seems to be some beefed up contrast too(that could be why I'm noticing a lot of really heavy AO). Apart from that, the only thing bugging me is that there doesn't seem to be a sky contributing any light.

Hello, thanks for your comments GecT, I've decided to strip out all the lighting and start again. I also had a lot of Gamma correction going on which got a bit confusing. Now just 1 portal light with GI and final gather, knocked back the AO pass in photoshop. Looks a lot cleaner already apart from the visible rays on the walls.

Nice. Much easier. Cleaner and more natural. I know, even as a relative newb, how much pedestal and gain and everything in-between can just scorch the retinas after a while. best to step back sometimes with fresh eyes.

Definite improvement! The second to last is my favorite. The midtones on the wood in the first image of this last batch look a bit muddy. Or is it just me?

It's nice to see lighting on the forum, you don't that often. This is a really good effort and mental ray is very tricky to get to grips with. Certainly it's much more accomplished than most other lighting attempts seen on the forum.

Certainly not Dave. There was the previous a disparaging remark that probably came from a troll. You don't see much lighting on the forum, and I like what I see in this thread. That's all.
