Changing my career to Animation, from Programmer

Hi all,

I have a very important question. Need your honest ideas.

I love animating and I have a degree in Animation. When I finished my degree I started work in Computer programming and now I have about 5 years of programming experiences with $60 yearly salary.

I always dream of finding animation career, and leave programming. I am very good at my current job, but I do not love it as much as animating.

I need to know if I work on my portfolio and make it very good, and try to find a job, how much I may get. On the other hand I know if I stay in programming my salary will go up to $80 at least one day.

I am not sure if I have to go with my love until it is not late. (I am 30 now) or stick on something I do not like?
Do you know how much I will get if I have a good talents and interests to animation jobs? what could be the average salary? Do you think I can find a job at least the same as my current salary now?

Thanks,

Sali

Do it man... anything is better than 60 dollars a year.

But seriously, try to find a way to combine what you're good at (programming) and what you love (animation). For example, you could look at a job like technical director, perhaps. I don't know what the average salary is.

I dont know much about either animation or programming, but I would just say follow your heart and do what makes you happy.

Thanks! Yes I mean $60k... :-)

I do want to listen to my heart, but going down in salary would be a little hard for my situation. That is why I want to know how low and how high the salary could be in this field.

I agree, I like to combine my skills with interests. I should research about what you suggested.

I think a good artist in the US could freelance for about $1000 a day. Obviously it would take some time to get to that stage. Riggers are always in demand. This would combine your programming knowledge with animation knowledge.
Read up some more about the industry, you might not like what you read.
