Is there a way to grow selection horizontally or vertically only in Maya?

Not that I know of, Could you show a shot of what you are trying to do there may be a work round...............dave

Growing selection in a certain axis, for example Y as seen in picture. I dont want my selection to be grown at the red crossed faces.

Maya will not do this without some sort of plugin, you can select those faces by clicking on the middle vert on the bottom then hold the shift key down then double click on the middle vert on the top, then its just a case of converting selection "Ctrl"+"F11"............dave

You can do this by selecting components and then converting them to faces as Dave suggested. But instead of verts in this case i'd select the edges and then convert selection to faces. I'll record something quickly for you.

if you want to go in a y axis, why not simply use the select edge ring and and then just convert selection to faces. Easy

I asked 'Alias' years ago for a directional grow selection, but it never happened

We have select verts or edge loops or edge rings and convert to faces.

I normally use this technique, but didnt know i could convert a single line to 2 parallel face loops. It makes sense now user added image

I was wondering if theres something i am missing with the grow selection. Thanks for the video also.

I only read the first part of Dave's comment and did not see he had suggested selecting verts and then converting to faces.

So then I chimed in with selecting edges loops or partials and convert to faces.

And then you suggested select edge rings and convert to faces.

I just had to chuckle because I think we inadvertently covered every base.
