Combining Linear with Cubic Curves

I want to draw a "D" like figure, which has a curve, and then a straight edge. I tried doing it with CV curve by making the arc using cubic curve degree. But it does not let me draw a linear edge afterwards. I must exit out of the curve creating mode and then draw a different curve which is linear.

1. Can I draw a single curve with both linear and cubic degrees?

2. If not, and the two edges (straight and curved) must be drawn separately, then how do I combine them?

Thanks
Asif

You can't have a curve that is both per se. One solution is to have multiple CVs at the corners to make the corner straight. Let Maya do it for you using combine. Try the different options to let it add yhe extra CVs. Or manually with Insert knot.
