Maya 2020 fundamentals - modelling the real world
Get halfway through a model and find it's an unworkable mess? Can't add edge loops where you need them? Can't subdivide a mesh properly? If any of this sounds familiar check this course out.

Service Pack install

At the risk of sounding terribly noobish I have some questions surrounding the installation of a service pack:

I currently have Maya 2013 installed and discovered it has 2 service packs available.

First, what is the process for installing a service pack? I've heard that uninstalling the entire program is required. Is this true? Are folders automatically deleted in an uninstall? If so, what folders should be saved to retain customizations?

Lastly, is it required to install SP1 first or can I simply go straight to SP2?

That's it, so thanks much for reading.

SP2 contains everything that was in SP1 and no, uninstalling Maya will not delete preferences. However, it's not a bad idea to backup preferences anyway.

Thanks Gen! But I'm still wondering if it's required to uninstall 2013 before installing SP2? The size of the file leads me to believe it's a full install, but I don't want to goof this up and prematurely start something that'll corner me user added image

you don't need to uninstall first.

I went ahead and installed SP2 without the uninstall, but when Maya was launched it didn't state anything about the Service Pack in the 'about Maya' section. It simply read "Maya 2013 x64" which should be expected since the installation whizzed by all too quickly, and Bonus Tools [Auto Unwrap UV] still wouldn't work properly sooo ....

I went ahead and uninstalled Maya, which was a bit scary since it never asked about keeping any folders (backups were made just in case though). I used the SP2 installation and lo & behold it worked! The 'About Maya' section now registers the Service Pack 2 install, but most importantly the HUD on my unwrap tool is now working and all my prefs remained intact to boot! W00t!!

So it appears that the uninstall is required after all.

Anyhow, "Cheers!" David and Gen! user added image It's now back to UV'ing ... which is kind of a good thing ... I guess .... user added image
