nCloth deforming badly when colliding with Poly edge...Help!!

Hi Guys,

I am hoping a dynamics guru can give me a bit of a hand here. I am trying to simulate a table cloth in Maya 2012 with nCloth. The problem that I am running into is this: terrible cloth deformations where the cloth collides with the edge of the table. I have tried tweaking the collision dynamics of the cloth as well as pushing the mesh densities up (500 x 500 poly) as well as down.

While I am not new to Maya, I have not worked with any sophisticated simulations in nCloth. I also have a separate problem of attaching Transform constraints to individual vertexes and preventing "spiky" deformations, but that may need to wait until I can solve this edge deformation issue first.

I would appreciate any help.

Thanks.

Hi Daverave

Thanks so much for responding to my question...here is a close-up pic of the deformation. It is only happening at the corners now after bumping the nCloth res up to 500 x 500 (waaay more than I would like to use!) The collision object is a simple un-beveled polygon rectangle simulating a tabletop.

I don't think its the ncloth its the way you need to smooth the mesh, With the mesh selected press the 3 button then render and see how it looks...............dave

Hi Dave,

Thanks for the advice, and I appreciate you taking the time to help me out. It wasn't the mesh smoothness as the deformations were happening on the edges and corners during the simulation.

In the end my Scene Scale needed to be tweaked and once I did the simulation ran normally. In fact, this took care of a host of problems that I was having! Still not a huge fan of nCloth as it seems counter intuitive and poorly documented, but I am starting to prefer it over Syflex.

I have used presets, e.g. Burlap, Silk, etc, but these only affect the dynamic properties of the cloth and not the Nucleus, right? Are there actual Nucleus presets that one can use?
