Wow, that looks really nice. Is this going to be primarily focused on paintFX?

Yes it will focus on paintFX. We'll also take a look at MR materials for this sort of work as well as using particle systems for placement and a ton of other stuff, The tutorial is about 10 hours long at the moment.

You can get great looking results with paintFX it just ain't that easy.

Wow! Oh, wow! That looks awesome! I've struggled to get PaintFX to create something that looks remotely real so I can't wait to get my hands on this tutorial.

is it possible to follow along with maya2012 or do I need 2014?

2012 will be just fine. Pretty much any version of maya will be ok.
