Physically Accurate Lighting tutorial

Hi,

I just watched the Physically Accurate Lighting tutorial and I have one question regarding the portal light nodes. According to the tutorial, when you connect this into an Area light, it transforms the light into a "final gathering container" (sort of). My question is, does this works without the Physical sky and sun? I mean, If I have a single scene, with one point light and Final Gathering (and Global Illumination) turned on, does using the portal light node helps "containing" the Final Gathering into a certain area? Or is this somehow linked with the Physical sky node?
