Animating a Walk

Hi, I am trying to animate a walk on Maya, and i hope someone can help me with this question:

Does the root of the body shifts and move over the foot carrying the weight before or after the landing of the foot? In other words, does the root shift before or after "Down position" of the walk?

thanks

the root joint in a biped character is located in the center of the hip area. that being said... if you watch a normal person walk, you will see where the root would be on the "down" of each foot. basically just observing people walk, you should get a pretty good sense of how it's supposed to look. hope that helped.
