Duplicate Special Smooth Mesh Issues

I'm a MASSIVE noob to Maya, so please try to explain things simply if possible or include shortcuts for commands, that would be really appreciated, thanks.

I'm just starting to model and following a tutorial on how to model a head for my character.
I am using duplicate special and modelling half of the face etc.

I'm at a point in the tutorial where it tells me to smooth the mesh, but when I do, this happens:

The person in the tutorial doesn't have this issue and they never mentioned merging or combining the meshes in any way at all. I have tried merging them but I must be doing something wrong.

Can I fix this or have I messed the whole thing up?

Thanks a lot user added image

I've figured out it's because my lines aren't completely straight in the centre, is there an easy way to fix this or should i really just start again?

Select the verts on the edge of the model, hold down "x" and move to the central grid line in the correct view

Also you seem to have faces on the inside of the head (between the halves) delete those first. Then once the halves are aligned do as tweety mentioned above

So I managed to get it straight on the edges, but when I smooth it, it still treats it as two separate objects and ends up with a giant hole in the middle

ok im not an expert however i can suggest you use Mirror geometry and make sure you tick merge with original and that would solve the issue , however i think the problem with the duplicate special is that you will have to combine the two halves and afterward select the vertices in the middle and "Merge"
im sorry this what i know hope you get it solved buddy

cheers
