Deleting faces

I have just begun maya.
I was trying to follow the maya tutorial https://download.autodesk.com/us/maya...ted/index.html and create a helmet, but when I delete some faces as they say for the polygon primitive cube which has dome shaped top part, instead of just getting deleted, the adjacent faces form a curve around it. Eg. if I delete a single face, it disappears, but the edges near it become curved.
Have i done something wrong in the steps? user added image user added image user added image

Sounds like you're in smooth mode. Try pressing the 1 key on your keyboard and see if this fixes the problem. Then press the 3 key and it will probably come back. The number keys 1 to 3 are quick ways to smooth a model.

Cheers, the Yeti.
