This course will look at the fundamentals of modeling in Maya with an emphasis on creating good topology. We'll look at what makes a good model in Maya and why objects are modeled in the way they are.
My proposal would be also to have a look on the Youtube files for a start. This helped me a lot. There are a lot of quite good tutorials to start up. And its for free!
If you want thesis writeups go and check out SIGGRAPH papers. You will find tons of implementations and knowledge. If you want tech try reading the GPU gems series. Good knowledge on low-level tasks.
