Complex UV Layout in Maya
Over the last couple of years UV layout in Maya has changed for the better. In this course we're going to be taking a look at some of those changes as we UV map an entire character

Boolean functions disappear model...

The Pterodactyl is progressing, but I've been having trouble with Booleans. I'm now trying to join head to body, but when I do, they both disappear. How to get past this?

Make sure you have both objects completely intersecting. It looks like you've got some border edge hanging out. Also the resulting geometry is going to be very messy. It's alright for learning, but in the future you might want to consider setting up the objects to have similar number of edges that you can connect up.

Thanks, stwert, I'll log that for the next project. But I moved the head back so it's covering all the edges of the neck, and both objects still disappear.

Most times this is because of two factors for me.

1) History - make sure you delete this on both items.
2) If it still not working try going to outliner and making sure both items are not in any form of group or history. If they are just drag them out and again delete history.

Hope it helps - apart from that i never have any problems apart from mesh cleanup.

Tried both. 'Problem's still here. I Deleted All By Type>History, and turned History to Off. I've included the Outliner. All looks fairly straightforward. I tried adding a 'test' beak. Both the beak and head are simple poly spheres with the same number of CV's. When I try to Union head and beak, they still disappear.

OK, here y' go. Just for a test, I created two more poly spheres and they Booleaned just fine.

edit: Just as a test, I took the two spheres which I had Booleaned together, and did a Union with the beak. No problem. I CTRL_Zed them apart and did a Union with the head. No problem again. Strange.

Hi Kelley,
Found the problem. The geometry does not fully intersect. There is a small "hole". After filling the 4 edges causing the hole, the boolean union worked fine.

Absolutely right! Well spotted. Once I fixed it the Boolean worked right off. Thanks.
