UV Editor doesn't want to respond...

After a week of texturing (on a different model) I was feeling quite confident using the UV Editor. Tonight, I cannot get the six-sided flattened cube (white lines) to appear. Before, one of the controls at the far left side would make it appear and I could use the Transform tools to adjust the texture. Where am I going wrong?

Press the "w" key to be in move mode. You may want to switch the component mode to move the UV's to UV mode.

The 'w' key doesn't seem to do anything. Where do I find 'Component Mode'. This is new territory.
.
edit: Found the Component Mode icon. Clicked it. But nothing changes in the UV Editor. How do I get the six-sided flattened cube to appear?
.
edit: Here's a copy of the doc., just in case.

Perhaps try clicking on Create UVs > Automatic Mapping, and then going into the UV Editor?

No go. I selected the object in the Outliner, then went to Create UV's>Automatic Mapping. Nothing happens and I get the following error message: "This command requires at least 1 argument(s) to be specified or selected; found 0. //" The object, which had been selected, deselects itself, and the texture which had been displayed in the UV Editor, disappears.

In the UV editor, right hand click and select Edit NURBS UV mode. This should show up your UVs. If you want to avoid this convert the NURBS objects to polygons.

Cheers, the Yeti.

Converting to polys did the trick. Thanks.

The components are UV's, poly, edges, and vertices.
