Missing texture attribute

I'm a beginner in Maya and am having the following problem:
In the attribute editor for most of the objects in my scene, the texture/shader attribute is missing so I can't tweak any of the textures. So, although the object is visibly textured and I can find the texture in Hypershade, it isn't displayed as one of the attributes which causes some major problems. When I try tweaking the texture through Hypershade, the object to which the shader is assigned doesn't change.
Thank you for your help, in advance!

Try right clicking on the object and selecting Material Attributes. It's possible the texture in the hypershade isn't the node that's actually applied to the object.
