Locator

Hello.
I have a question abou locators.
I have a crane, with an object that the crane is supposed to take and put on something else.
I have managed to create a locator, costrain it to the crane, so that the locator would follow the movements, and finally costrain the can to the same locator, so that the can would also follow the same movements.
How do I prevent the can to be costrained in the frames where the crane did not pick it up and where the crane should drop it?
Hope you understood.
Thank you in advance

in the channel box of the can there is a line with the constraints. you can set the value to 0 or 1 and key it.

I tried to do that but i can't key it. As soon as i try to key it, it does not do a thing.
First i do the animation of the crane. Then i create the locator. I costrain the locator to the crane so the locator follows the movement. Then i costrain the can to the same locator using Costrain-> Parent (the same one i used for the crane). And now for some reason the can is away from the locator, but follows the movement anyway. So i click set rest position for the can on the right frame and it's working. But i can't key the costrain!

uncheck "maintain offset" while constraining, so the locator doesn't jump away.
you definetely can key the constrain values.
