Beginner Help; files useless

Hello,

So I made a ridiculously stupid mistake in a current project where I saved using the same methods of categorization as my documents. I have now added a dot to all my file names in ascii format ("12.Hand" or "20.Torso" are two examples), which apparently converts them to documents. I can apparently work around this if the file is still in my last 5 recent files, but once it's no longer there its useless. I tried expanding my number of recent files in preferences, but that only works moving forward. Is there anyway I can salvage these files or do I have to start over?user added image

Super rookie mistake here : /

What kind of documents are these? Can you simply rename the document 12Hand.ma or something? What happens if you navigate to the folder with your files and right click > open with > Maya?
