Maya 2020 fundamentals - modelling the real world
Get halfway through a model and find it's an unworkable mess? Can't add edge loops where you need them? Can't subdivide a mesh properly? If any of this sounds familiar check this course out.

Pine Tree modelling

I have limited experience with paint effects in Maya and now some friends want me to create a winter scene, with very little time to create one and have it finished by the time we hit the winter season I better start now.

So is there a tutorial somewhere on how to create pine trees in maya, I've googled for one but couldn't find any, so any help and tips would be appreciated

I just looked into it, those are paint effects, I don't have a lot of experience with them, when I move around with branches etc, I dont quite get it to look like a pine tree

xfrog plugin has some sulotions, i havent tried the xfrog plugin for maya, but for cinema 4d its pretty straight forward, add 1 branch, change attributes on it, add new set of branches that will grow from the first branch, and work your way through it like that

There's a tutorial here on Paint FX for environments, which is modular and whereas it's not specifically pine trees you should be able to make any sort of trees you want after following it. It's quite long, so if you started now you'd probably be finished before Christmas. The forest in this shot was made using the same techniques.

While i'm at it, tinsel's, I found out how to make them in 3DS Max, but since i'm unfamiliar with it and don't own it, i'm looking for ways to create it in maya, anyone got any ideas on how to make it or know of a tutorial somewhere?

I tried a few things but this looked the best, basically I created a poly helix with a lot of curls deleted the inner polys then applied fur (grass), then all I did to the fur was change the tip width to the same as the base width. I will leave the colour up to you. If any one has any better ways please show.................dave

Looks good dave.

You've just given me an idea.
I've been making some scenes with grass in but just using
a basic grass shader as havnt wanted to use expensive paint effects grass....
But I'd forgotten about the grass fur preset.

Is it expensive to render? Will it render in mental ray?

Hiya..

On draft?

Expensive as in, is it heavy to render? At 5 seconds for that frame it looks quite cheap (quick)

I'd be looking at like an average gardens worth of grass.... I'll have to run some tests.

Sorry for the brief thread hijack warhammer...

Yeah, I keep meaning to look into proxies.... I've been put off as last time I tried to learn how to use them they didn't work for me. Should seek out a decent tut for using them.

The fur should work for purposes in the mean time...

Cheers Dave
