Can't detach components?

Trying to detach components in my object for this tutorial (I'm new to Maya): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Q_HyTN2wps

however when i select the vertices i need to detach and select "separate" under Mesh nothing happens and it tells me "Cylinder1 (name of my object) has only one piece, ignored"

Why can't i detach it??

You need to be in face mode to separate or extract................dave

Sorry miss read your post, you need to be in edge mode and make sure you have all the edges going round the box selected. if done correctly in face mode marque the top half and move up, the top half should move without moving the bottom part...........dave

Yep, what Dave said, you need to select edges not vertices.

Hmm, that's odd. You could try exporting your object as an obj then reimporting it into a new scene and see if you can then detach it. Also try selecting all the faces that make up the lid and going to mesh > seperate, then select the two pieces and go to mesh > combine. This should give you the same outcome.

If you upload your scene here I'll take a look at it for you.

Just zip the .mb or .ma scene file and add as an attachment to your reply

I took a quick look at the tut. At about 10:00 the instructor selects the edge and does a "detach component". At about 11:30 he selects the object and does a "separate".

Found your problem. You have some issues with your geo that I think started when you did the extrudes shown at 3:40 and 5:58 in the tutorial.
The edges shown in red should be single edges. The corner of the arches have 6 edges and the base of the lid has 4 edges.

Easy way to clean this up is to run a mesh cleanup. That will get rid of the faces on top of each other. The arches can be cleaned up by merging the vertices using a threshold of 0.01. The geo on the inside has the same problem.

You also have some rogue vertices on the side.
