Maya 2020 fundamentals - modelling the real world
Get halfway through a model and find it's an unworkable mess? Can't add edge loops where you need them? Can't subdivide a mesh properly? If any of this sounds familiar check this course out.

is edge loop identical to subdivision?

Seems obvious but wanted to be sure...

2 simple polygon cubes. If I specify 2 in subdivision width input channel for one cube, and for other cube I add an edge loop to mimic 2 subdivisions.

Are both cubes geometrically identical? in other words there is no difference between edges created with edge loop tool and edges created with subdivision, correct?

About 25min into this video is a good 'good practice' snippet from one of the Pixar guys.

The whole clip is actually quite interesting.
