Over the last couple of years UV layout in Maya has changed for the better. In this course we're going to be taking a look at some of those changes as we UV map an entire character
Well enough now to start doing some work. Been reading alot about things I should know about Maya that I did not and going to get a lot of thing done and dusted once I am back up to speed.
Speaking to some people about lighting and texturing and they said try going back to basics and work up.
So I am.
My first project in Uni was make a desk in a room. So, simple models in a simple bedroom setup.
Will be adding as I go along.
Maya 2015 and Mental Ray for this one.
Got the lighting right (I think) then started on the rug and carpet. (Maya Fur)
Lets see there I end up. There is no final plan in place yet.

Tweaking tweaking tweaking. Added wall paper and some photos frames (Artwork by Jonathan Hamilton).
Love the reflections in the glass of the frames - some graininess but settings not on high yet.

Storage box's for under the bed and the cupboard.
The shaders been giving me some head acks but think I am happy with it now.
Rendered them out of place just for testing. Added some colored box's as well again for testing as i have nothing to put in them yet.

I've only got two small comments and that is the white carpet map scale (H/V pile size) looks a bit on the large size which in turn makes the carpet look super fuzzy. Maybe a slight shorter fur length on the white carpet? It's quite evident on the 3rd from last image.
Lastly, some of the furniture seem to float a bit, they don't seem grounded and 'weighty' to me?
Otherwise really nice!
(Oh, are you thinking of adding a smidge of volumetric light for dust particles?)
Yes planing on some volumetric lighting at some point but feel thats a little way off yet.
Not sure why your seeing the floatyness - all items are grid snapped to the floor I beleave - but will double check this. - Hoping this may get sorted with a ambient Occ pass.
The carpet its based on (well the whole room really) is the one in my room at my dads place. It is quite fluffy and has got the wavy patten to it and I think it looks about right - but going to do some test with it being smaller and post them up after.
Here are some tests - Up until now the carpet was set to 4x4 with a length of 1.5. Look at some photos of the room that is a little big, but its hard to tell just how much smaller it needs to go. But as I said the carpet is fluffy (really nice on your feet).
If you need good look at them right click and view image.
