bandign on background on render - photoshop compstite looks weird

Hi all,

I'm sure i should know this by now but I havent really rendered out anything like this. My background gradient is banding in the render - if I try to render out the geometry without the background then add a similar one in photoshop then my particles look odd. Is there a trick to rendering without that banding, or a trick to the compositing that Im missing -

any help really appreciated,
thanks
