Maya 2020 fundamentals - modelling the real world
Get halfway through a model and find it's an unworkable mess? Can't add edge loops where you need them? Can't subdivide a mesh properly? If any of this sounds familiar check this course out.

Eyelashes (map on plane) won't render in mr

Is there any way to make eyelashes (an alpha map on a polygonal plane, put in transparency node of a material) appear when I render using mental ray? They show up fine in the viewport (see screenshot), but when I render, it's just the solid black plane. Yet it renders correctly in Maya Software. I don't want to use that...is there some setting I can use to make it render in mental ray? I'd really prefer not to have to go back and model each eyelash individually, sigh.

Also, what's the best way to attach these lashes to the character's eyelid so that they move when she blinks?

if you're using the mia material you'll need to plug it into cutout opacity

take a look at this i recorded it sometime ago for another user who asked a similar question.
