How can I use IK handle for Joints that bend the wrong way?

Hello, I'm making a robot character, and the knees look like this, but if I try to use the IK handle it tries to make it bend in the wrong way because of how the *inward* angle is.

I'm not an expert in this field but I would be modeling the leg with enough of a forward bend in it to make the IK handle bend the way you want.

Cheers, the Yeti.

I'm aware that that an IK done that way will always work, but I am trying to get the IK to work in this scenero.

Because I like how with the leg done the way it is at top, it can bend nearly 180 degrees without any clipping:
