Not sure about the smaller cube, it makes for strange refractions and reflections that I personally haven't seen in emerald cut gems. Check out this reference diagram to see how the "step cut" effect happens.

Thanks for the reply...actually i am new in maya and also didn't know the exact shape of an emerald despite searching for it....you made my task easier.

can anyone suggest what material and texture should i use?

You're on the right track with the mia_material_x. I probably wouldn't use a marble texture as it's making the gem appear kind of cloudy. If anything, since the camera is so close, I'd maybe use a modified solid fractal texture (high amplitude, high threshold etc) in the bump channel to create tiny imperfections. If you're going for realism then there is work to be done with the lighting and environment as well. Lots of studio lighting tuts floating around.

changing assigned texture

How do i delete the marble texture and replace it with fractal one??? i can't find anything to delete the assigned texture. (i am using maya 2015).

You can just assign a new material, and the old one will no longer be applied. Or you can right click on the attribute and "break connection" and then apply a new texture. Or in the hypershade you can select the marble texture and hit delete. If you want to clear out unused textures, in the hypershade you can go edit > Delete unused nodes.

I have redesigned my Gem emerald model..and retextured it...how can i make it more realistic??

Here are two files i used which i forgot to attach in previous reply.."ematexture" is used in hypershading, and I can't upload the other one which i used for environment...

Since you can't upload the environment texture, could you show a render of your current results?
