Maya problem - wierd shading...

Hi, I'm new so I hope this isn't a really stupid question :p

I just made some text in Maya, and then changed the view to "smooth shade all", and this is what happened

Is that a bug? Whats going on?
I've done this before and it shaded it fine... why is it doing this?!


I've had this same problem when working with other more primitive shapes like rectangles and stuff... where Maya will only shade part of the shape

Please help

it looks like there arent enough points for it to complete and fill up the letters.... before you make the text go to the options and look around in there and make sure anything is not set sup wrong

I "fixed", the problem by deleting the text, and then remaking it.

Here's a new screenshot.

However, I've circled the areas in red where there's still gaps.

Is this normal?

BTW, in case I wasn't clear, all this is is some simple text (Create->Text), and then I've selected Shading->Smooth Shade All, or Shading->Flat Shade All from the viewport.

ARRG

The problem came back when I pressed "1" on the keyboard.

Now it wont go away again and I have to delete the text and remake it...

Hmmm, ok set it to curves when you make your text.. then select all the text and duplicate it and move it foreward a bit, to the wanted thickness... Now select each letter at a time thats in the back (or if its in one piece select the one piece) and select the part infront of it, then go Surfaces>Loft.. set it to polygons and put it to quads. Hopefully this will work out for you user added image. If you need some images i would be happy to make them for you.

Ah

When I do as you said, and loft only one letter at a time, it works

HOWEVER, the first bit "SPACE" is one "letter", so how should I go about doing it?

Nope nothing

In the screenshot where you see the red circles, I have done absolutely nothing except make the text, and then select "smooth shade all", and there are gaps in the shading user added image


Then, if I press "1" on the keyboard, it gets about 10 times worse (as in the other shots)

What i would do then, is duplicate it many times and on each copy try to delete the other letters, so on each one keep 1 letter, and delete the others. If that doesnt work then ... hmmm.

it sounds like the smoothing level! pushing 1 on the keyboard turns the nurbs or subdiv smoothing level to 1 pushing 2 will raise it to 2 and pushing three will raise it to you guessed it!! 3!!! push 3 and it should be fine i think.

pure morning is absolutely right user added image
the text ur creating is nurbs im assuming
1, 2 and 3 are nurbs detail levels
if you hit 1, the detail is really low to increase viewport speed
3 makes it looks more realistic
