The Return of "Identity Crisis"!!!

Yo Gs and G'ettes!

Here I be again and am I ever so glad to show you all my latest renders for my eventually to be released short, "Identity Crisis". First, I'd like to say this is still a work in progress. My first question is this; There are door ways that go into darkness in the pics. I'm interested in adding doors so you won't have to wonder what the flock the dark parts are for. How can I make doors and what method should I use? How can I tone down the bright glow of the lamp and still keep the room lit as it is? I'm still very excited about making this movie. Hopefully, I'll get it done. I'll add more to this thread later on... I have to go to my regular Joe job early and I need my ugly sleep. user added image Thanks guys and gals for your help!

Did anyone get to look at the images I rendered recently? I was hoping to get a bigger response but so far, the one thing I've discovered is it looks "creepy". user added image Thanks Raull for giving me a new direction for my movie. Originally, I was planning on going for a more subtle, family friendly look, but now, since I've been influenced so much by directors like John Woo, Sam Raimi, Tim Burton, and even Robert Rodriguez, those with a bit of a dark side to their work, I think I'll go with more of a mysterious dark look. More on the details larer. Just take a look at my images and let me know what you think needs to be adjusted. How can I get soft shadows in my renders? Thanks in advance!

have you tried to turn on shadows for your lights ?

I think your floortiles are a little big on the first render and the groove between them is a little thick for them. I think you've got the glossiness on them just right though! user added image

The room seems to have a lot of 100% dead straight lines they need to be broken up a bit and softened a little I think. The lighting seems a little off: look at the white "hot spot" next to the forground lamp on the 2nd render. That glare on the wood support probably shouldnt be there.

first what carsten (caligraphics) said. and then there is 2 ways to archieve soft shadows.
  • enable raytrace shadows with more rays
  • change every single light that shall throw shadows - add a few more lights around (that do not cast specular)
both methods have advantages and disadvantages. the first will create realistic shadows that get blurry the further away from the shadow casting object and will render very slow. the other leaves you with experimenting a lot if you want to keep the lighting you had before, but real nice soft shadows w/o need to enable raytracing.

other comments: the floor is a bit odd. it is either not dirty enough, or somehow strange. it might help to decrease the specularity and add a very slight reflection to it which is almost not noticeable.

oops - actually you do have already reflection in the last shot - it is a bit hard to see in those tiny shots - maybe rendering them out a little bit bigger to see more detail.

Here's my latest render. I think I've found a little happier medium thanks to folks here at SM and a great book called Maya 4.5 Savvy. Explains a lot about depth map shadows and does a bang up job at that. I think the rest of the production will be a breeze! user added image
