Get halfway through a model and find it's an unworkable mess? Can't add edge loops where you need them? Can't subdivide a mesh properly? If any of this sounds familiar check this course out.
nice pics.. the whiskey render is awesome. the cigarette: I'd reduce the bump depth and desaturate the filter end a bit too but... looks a little too orange to me but I'm only going by UK cigarettes - maybe austrian smokes really are that bumpy and erm.. garish
Well actually we don't have so bumpy cigarettes being sold here in austria...well...but some of my cigarettes really look that way after i've had them several days in my trousers (where they got lost)....the thing i should really change is the saturation of the filter....scanned in a cigarette, and took some color-values out of the scan....but it's really to orange...looks like I have to do some Photoshop-work ;o))...
Reducing the bump is also a good idea....was just a contest: Me against a friend of mine
Maya vs. Cinema 4D
Who can make faster a photorealistic cigarette...but i guess i've won anyway ;o)))
For the HDRI-fake i have to increase the samples of the Area light...but i'm so unpatient, can't wait 'till pix are finished...and area-lights are somewhat of slooooooow......especially with refracions....
Enclosed are different Pictures of the Same MAYA-Szene, rendered with several different Scanliners/Raytracers. I have not included any rendertimes, because some Render-Engines only used one CPU, while other used the whole Renderfarm (5 CPU's ->Mental RAY)
wow i didn't think the results would differ so much!
The Renderman looks the crispiest but the shadow of the ashtray looks a little jagged, but in any case you've helped sway my choice to renderman
The Shadow-Settings need some tweaking anyway. What's remarkable between all those renderers is, that they seem to handle the Shadow-Map sizes in different ways. For Example Mental Ray needed in my cases at least a Map Size of 1024 of acceptable Shadows, whereas Maya was statisfied with a 256er. Renderman is in between with 512 (Renderman was the fastest Renderer in the Test...even faster than Mental Ray who took all 5 CPU's for this image, but for Renderman i had to split the image from top, and render two threads for using both CPU's).
All RenderTimes all somewhere between 30 and 40 seconds. This Image isn't an ideal picture for Testing RenderEngines. It has no heavy models, heavy textures, or anything else..just a test
