After The Render: Shrinking Down Movie File Sizes...

Okay, here's a simple one. I just finished a tutorial in the Maya 4.5 Savvy Book and I am very impressed with the final results I ended up with. My first real forey into animation was very educational. user added image My problem is, I rendered out to an avi file but that sucker turned out to be 205 MB!!! Holy buckets! What do you guys suggest I get to shrink it down considerably? I'd like to upload it to my website but 205 MBs would take eons to upload or download! Thanks!

Russell

BTW, here's a still of the first frame of the short... what do ya think?

I use Adobe Premiere for my animation making whether its for DVD use or web distribution.

You can take the uncompressed .avi file into Premiere and then re-export it as an .mpg, .qt, or divxx (provided you have the proper codecs to do so.)

Another popular way is to render the entire animation as .tga files and then pull them into Premiere or another NLE. Beauty of using .tga files is that it's easy to touch up individual frames for post production processing, etc.

There are a few NLE editors out there that are free that might do the job for you too, but I don't know any names off the top of my head.

Good luck.

sjurick's hit it spot on! Render as sequential .tga's and then use a good vid app. to make your movie...this will allow you to use any codecs you have on your system user added image

TMPGenc is a great prog for what you want to do. It will convert your file to a small mpeg, with nearly lossless compression.

xvid is a good codec, compression i think is a little better than divx and i'm pretty sure it's free, whereas divx is not.

Is TMPEGENC hard to figure out? I mean, it can't be any more difficult to figure out than Maya is/was. It has to be a cakewalk by comparison. user added image

If you encode it with xvid, people will have to have that codec in order to play it, but i think there is an option that lets people who have divx installed to play it also.
