Introduction to Maya - Modeling Fundamentals Vol 2
This course will look in the fundamentals of modeling in Maya with an emphasis on creating good topology. It's aimed at people that have some modeling experience in Maya but are having trouble with complex objects.

dust cloud

does anyone know what would be the best way to make a realistic looking dust cloud, like the kind you'd find under a helicopter or in dragonball z? any help would be appreciated

sure.

There are lots of ways to do that.

The question you have to ask yourself is:

"Do you feel lucky?" hehe... sry, had to say thatuser added image

Seriously tho, is your shot going to have a locked-off camera? or will the camera be moving?
This is important in case your due-date/deadline is approaching fast.

Otherwise, if you have more time, research the type of ground that your dust cloud would be emitting from.

Is it sand? Dirt? Grassy field? Asphalt?

If sand, dirt, or dirty asphalt, I would combine a raytraced software cloud, or even a hardware sprite sequence with a color and/or texture of a mix of light greys, tans, and browns.

Then layer over that a bit of hardware point, or multipoint particles with a rgbPP color of a sandy tan/brown to get the "particulate" type of grit that is in a dust cloud like that.

For reference, you can check out the dust clouds, and pyro movies at: www.artbeats.com

If you camera is NOT going to move at all, and you do not need too much detail, you can get away with a subtle cloud genrated in post on another layer combined with a depth pass of your scene to give more depth, and occlusionuser added image

Good luck!

is there a way to do it with fluid effects? I noticed that their puffball example looked really good and realistic, is there a way to modify that to get the desired look? thanks for you help

I'm sure there are many attributes that you could alter to get the look you want from that fluid exampleuser added image

Check out the docs regarding that example, and you should have no problems, ....other than possibly rendertime depending on your resolutionuser added image

There are TONS of attributes in a fluid, so directing you to a few specific attributes would be quite difficult at the moment for me as I'm not in front of Maya right now...

Good luck! and show us your progress & any tips when you get a chance!

Well, at first look, I thought 'Hey, it's just sprites with a toon shader."

Then I thought about it a little bit moreuser added image

Some ideas:

*Particle instancing:
Paint a "cloud-type" shape in Photoshop, and map that onto a simple poly plane in Maya.
Use that cloud-object as your object to instance so when your object comes down for a landing, ramp up the emittion rate.
Make your emaitter an omni so it emits outwards by default.
Tweak from there.

Are you goiung for the toon look?

I ask as my next idea(s) are not meant for that kind of look.

Lemme knowuser added image

well, a cartoon look would be true to the original material, but my goal actually was to make it look real and possibly somewhere down the line composite it somehow into live action footage
thanks for your suggestions

I think the look of your clouds is nice, but as for their movement I have a few sugguestions.

I would add some drag so that they slow down over time. Also, I'm not sure why they rotate around the charater. That doesn't look right to me. Lastly, they clouds seem to disperse by scaling down mostly, maybe it would be nice to see a little bit of a transparency fade.

Other than that, it looks good.:headbang:
