shading/colouring? - what tha?

consider this a question from a complete newbie.....only started about a week ago:

was wondering how i might actually go about shading/giving a model some colour? e.g. how might i do this?

You would need to create a texture in Photoshop or some such program, or you could experiment with the procedural textures Maya comes with.

In the Hypershade (window > rendering editors > hypershade) you can create a material for an object. In the material's attributes, you can assign texture files to different attributes.

Try doing a search, there's a lot of info regarding this spread around the board already.
