This course will look at the fundamentals of modeling in Maya with an emphasis on creating good topology. We'll look at what makes a good model in Maya and why objects are modeled in the way they are.

The only other tools I use for inserting geometry (as opposed to extruding) is:

To insert along a line:
Edit polygons -> Cut faces

To split the faces in the middle:
Edit polygons -> Subdivide

This can be useful too (Byrons polytools bevel from Highend3d):
Edit polygons -> Bevel
