rigging - deformations?

hey everyone...
trying to rig up my space character (if anyone saw it in the wip section). i had some problems with rigging it myself, mostly because i have no idea what i'm doing, so i decided to try out a plugin to see if i fared any better, and i'm still getting these crazy deformations. for instance, somehow it seems that my shoulder joint is attached to the geometry of his helmet, because when i move his arm down, the helmet deforms. also his side deforms when i try to put his arms down. really, all i need to do is pose him with his arms down so taht's all i'm after, and i don't understand enough about rigging to know what to do to make this work. is there a way to reduce the range of influence or something for the shoulder joint so that it doesn't affect the head? here's what happens when i try to put the arm down, with circles around the 'trouble areas'

You should look into Painting Skin Weights. It's located under Skin > Edit Smooth Skin > Paint Skin Weights Tool. That will allow you to paint the weights of the vertices on your mesh.
