Either that, or they needed something to compete with Pixologic's zBrush; Maya doesn't really have the uber-smooth-sculpting capabilities that zBrush has.

I'm sure you can tell, but the ideas of two things have been quite a challenge for a while, to even the greatest of modelers:

1) Something with 4 arms

2) Something with 2 arms, and a set of...

Just goes to show that the artist's abilities are what makes art, not the tools that the artist posesses :D

I'm sure "z" is referred to as "zed" in audio, as many letters sound alike if not said carefully (b, v, c, z, d, e, t, p, g).
