Over the last couple of years UV layout in Maya has changed for the better. In this course we're going to be taking a look at some of those changes as we UV map an entire character
The second one lists a few scripts you can use if you're using raytracing since the first method only works with depth map shadows (not sure if this has been implemented in current versions of maya & MR, though...someone can chime in if they know for certain).
The ways described in the links are how you do it...some things can't be as easy as you want, y'know? The tut doesn't say you HAVE TO bake the lighting...they just say you COULD for a painting guideline.
