Introduction to Maya - Modeling Fundamentals Vol 1
This course will look at the fundamentals of modeling in Maya with an emphasis on creating good topology. We'll look at what makes a good model in Maya and why objects are modeled in the way they are.

I just had the same problem
Turned out to be that my Clipping Plane Attributes for my camera were set too high for it to render the particles. I got same message about particle being skipped. Turned down my clipping plane options & it worked fine.
