Make sure your normals are all facing the same way on both objects...

MANY THANKS!!!!!!

GREAT, THANKS KURT!!!!user added imageuser added imageuser added image

I just had to remodel the leg and not rotate the hulls and vertexes as I did before. I didn't know how to fix the normals so I just restarted the Nurbs modeling and converted to Polygons, worked like a charm!!!! Took about 10 minutes. Is there a command where I can reorient the normals if I've made them go out of alignment with the rest of the object??

MORE GREAT NEWS

Apparently it's not wise to stop the video from playing when you encounter a problem :o I found that the further I watched along on the dog tutorial, that you encountered the same problem as me. Will not panic next time.

THanks for the assistance Kurt. user added image

I find it better to watch all the way through then take it from the top again and follow it in maya, pause when you need to and you will roughly know why you're doing what you're doing. If you get me user added image

I watched all 4 parts of the dog tutorial before I started from scratch again and actually began modelling, helped me in the long run I think.
