about house walls

im going to create a house made by polygons. Its simple to make the basic shape on the rooms but what is the simplest way to make the walls width larger? i thought "extrude face" would be good, but it does not work as i want.

you could use a polygon cube and then just scale in the appropriate direction of pull the vertices to the thickness you want the wall?
(im assuming your using planes, if your already using cubes then maybe pulling verticies is the best way?)

Thanks for wasting your time reading this line.
