Introduction to Maya - Modeling Fundamentals Vol 1
This course will look at the fundamentals of modeling in Maya with an emphasis on creating good topology. We'll look at what makes a good model in Maya and why objects are modeled in the way they are.

poly count for game model

is 3000 tris a good poly count for this. its nothing im going to pursue on, i just figured id give game modeling a go.

To answer your question, 3000 tris/polys is excellent for a game model. Most new engines that come out can handle that. HL2 game models have about 3500 polys (i think... may want to check that).
