3d into 2d?

Anyone on the boards been able to integrate a 3d object into either a 2d still or footage? It's what i'm looking to do. So if anyone has any tips, please share them.

I hate to tell you , but all the 3d you do becomes 2d in the end user added image

Hmm, Well mate, what you´re asking is almost an artform on itself. Almost all VFX are based on integrating them with a still or footage. Best tips I can give you are:
  • If you´ve got Unlimited, try to use the LIVE© feature that comes with the program. (Check the docs on that)
  • You should try to match, as best as you can, the light sources from the footage to your 3D counterpart, so it´ll blend nice and easy (what an utopia user added image)
  • Look for a compositing software that handles alpha channels, and Zdepth channels. AfterEffects© Is a great choice for example. If you´re blending a still, Photoshop© is enough.
  • When rendering, try to do so with an image format that exports also Alpha channels, and zdepth's.
  • When compositing (which I´m the worst person in the whole world to tell you about, since I don´t know exactly how, I´m still learning modelling user added image) Use the alpha & depths channels to work with your objects depth and display in the final "2D" render (the one the compositing software does to bake the final animation)

adldesigner, thanks, some nice info there. Anyone come across any tutorials on the composition side for incorporating 3d objects into live footage? Haven't found much myself.

What's later going to bake your noodle more is how to integrate a live person in a 3d environment user added image (it's easier the other way around user added image)

hmmm, don't even want to think about that one user added image

The scenario is this. Going to shoot a small scene of a streetwith a static camera, no movement at all. I have a model of a coin i want to animate rolling down the pavement. The coin is an active rigid body. I thought Maya's live was for tracking sequences of images. whenever i just import a single image it wont track. Anyhow, could i just create a plane and assign the image to that? I'm going to create an establishing shot with a cardboard box on the pavement and i'll have the dimensions of that so i can setup the camera.
